  • Mean Red Chicken

    Kathy Sturman

Paperback (Palmetto Publishing Group, Oct. 22, 2019)
Grace Anne likes her job working with the chickens and she doesn't want to complain to her mother and father about the meaness of the red chicken, so she just tries some things on her own. First she tries to learn the language of the chickens. She practices cluck, cluck, cluck, cluck Cluck with her friend Nancy. Nany soon believes she sounds just like a chicken. So Grave Anne tries talking in their language to them. They are interested and tip their heads to the side. But the red chicken doesn't move. The next day, she brings in a ball and rolls it around and throws it. That captures the red chickens attention and Grace Anne can collect her eggs. She finds some grass seed another day, carries that into the chicken house and finds a place to plant them, in the sun. She puts the seed in little rows and sings some of the songs she is learning by playing piano with her mother and the chickens settle down and listen. She jumps up and gets another two eggs from the red chicken. But the red chicken acts strangely and the other chickens show their fright too. Grace Anne looks around and sees a red fox wandering around. Grace Anne is worried because the chickens are upset. She walks around the hen house before gathering eggs and sees many places where the hen house would be fairly easy to get in. The next day she got lumber and nails so she could mend the holes in the chicken house. Nancy helps her with the hammer and nails. Afterwards, Grace Anne walks Nancy back home. It is dark, but she sees the lights to her house and runs to it. Her Dad is home the following day and he and his friend look at the Hen house. Her dad is so pleased with all she has done in the hen house and her Dad's friend tells Grace Anne when she arrives, that he will build a little fence to put around Grace Anne's grass seeds. Grace Anne is so happy. Her dad and his friend are so kind to her and so pleased with her work that she thanks Jesus quietly for His help because she knows he is always by her side. She knows also that The love Jesus gives to her reaches her father and his friend too.
